After 2 years since building our new modern production facility we’ve been working hard to achieve Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA) which is the highest standard of hygiene, traceability and good practice for small to medium food businesses.
Kirsty (a local lass and microbiology graduate) and our new Operations Manager spent 3 months training, putting systems of traceability and condensing all my paper work.
In short, we are of the standard that all the major supermarkets require of their suppliers/potential suppliers.
We did it!
Well done to the whole team for their massive massive efforts to get us to this level.
So now our customers can have the extra confidence that all McCaskie Butchers’ sausages, burgers and kebabs are produced in a SALSA approved facility.

Blazing sunshine on the big May Bank Holiday weekend; it’s the prefect recipe for an awesome BBQ with friends and family.
Everyone’s familiar with the staple favourite BBQ foods such as sausages, burgers, kebabs. Of course, at McCaskie’s we’re always well stocked with these if there’s even a hint of BBQ weather. However, the quality of our meats and flavour is what really makes a McCaskie’s BBQ something extra special.

McCaskie Butchers got the next best thing to the Royal warrant of appointment when HRH The Princess Royal visited the shop yesterday to open our new butchery and production facility.
There’s been a tangible buzz from our customers in the shop, in Wemyss Bay and online with congratulations, good wishes and comments flying in on the McCaskie Butchers Facebook page.
HRH The Princess Royal, who is President of the Scottish Beef Club, was received by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire (Mr. Guy Clark) and was met and shown round the McCaskie Butchers shop and new facility by owners Nigel and Helen Ovens together with Nigel’s mother, Elizabeth.
McCaskie Butchers, which was established in 1935, have been using the new state-of-the-art butchery and production facility for a few weeks now and was developed to help improve production efficiencies and raise the already high quality of service McCaskie’s provides to customers throughout the UK.
Nigel said “It was an amazing day. HRH The Princess Royal was so interested in everyone she met and she spoke and chatted to every member of staff. We had our farmers, suppliers and the new facility’s builders here today too who all enjoyed a special lunch to mark the occasion. It was a great boost for the Butchers and Scotch meat industry. Also, mum was so happy.”

Now, Helen Ovens says she doesn’t get out of Wemyss Bay much but this week I’ve taken her to our supplier Enotria’s wine tasting in Ayr and today she’s with me at Oban Distillery at the Winter Festival Haggis Competition.
McCaskie’s were crowned for the third year running as the ‘People’s Choice Champion’ in the Golden Haggis Awards where the public decides the winner (not the judges). We’re so very pleased!
