What great weather we've been having! We managed to get out quickly each night to enjoy the sun have a BBQ. That's three already this week, one more than all last summer. On the BBQ we cooked our bacon cheese burgers, Greek style lamb leg steak, sharing ribeye, pork sausages and new gluten free BBQ flavour pork steaks. All very tasty but favourites were the lamb steaks and bacon burgers. The pork sausages are always a favourite though.   For Wemyss Bay Butcher Mearns T McCaskie winning the 2016 West of Scotland Black Pudding Championship made it remarkable three times from five.  The 2012 and 2014 champion was judged the best in the West of Scotland when the regional heat of this year’s Scottish Black Pudding Championship was held on Wednesday 20th April at the Garfield House Hotel in Stepps.  The Black Pudding from local butcher Nigel Ovens at Mearns T McCaskie will now go forward to represent the region at the Scottish Final to be held later in May.   The black pudding will be purchased by a mystery shopper and tested against the winners from the other four regions of Scotland.  These will be from the North of Scotland champion from Dingwall, South West of Scotland champion from Largs, with the East and South East heats still to be held (25th and 27th April).  A panel of experts will then decide who has the best butcher’s Black Pudding in Scotland for 2016. Mearns T McCaskie are the 2015 Scottish Champion Haggis makers and they also hold the West of Scotland Pork Sausage Championship. Making the presentation on Wednesday night Douglas Scott, Chief Executive of the Scottish Craft Butcher said:- “Scottish Butchers develop their meat products in consultation with their customers.  Their feedback is very important and butchers can react quickly to changing consumer tastes since in most cases they make their black pudding on the premises.  This competition once again showcased the high levels of skill and pride in product among the independent butcher’s sect...

Great night for the wee Mearns T... at the Scottish Craft Butchers regional meeting where we retained our title of West of Scotland Black Pudding Champion.   In the gluten free product evaluation and best lamb product competition held a few weeks ago we won a few Golds which was great but (even better) we won the diamond for Scotland's best lamb product.   Cash prize for exchange of my recipe to feature in a national campaign for lamb.   ...

With Easter over for another year we are looking forward to what spring has to offer. Our cafe is open as usual and we have free-range Copas Turkey and Scottish Lamb roasts on our new menu (launching soon). Also, our Butcher’s Steak Nights are coming and we’ll publish the dates soon. Every night I walk round and check everything is looking good and I must praise my staff for keeping the highest standards. Check out the photos of my chills- looking sharp. Well we did it and it was as stressful as ever battling to get our products off to Glasgow college for the 2016 meat evaluation and competition run by the Scottish Federation of Meat traders. There are two categories this year : Gluten Free and Lamb Innovation In the Gluten Free category we entered : Ultra-lean rump steak burgers Gluten free pork and spring onion sausages Chicken Tikka kebabs (made with juicy trimmed thigh meat and roasted red peppers) I think the best of the bunch our new, gluten free Italian meatballs - a blend of our gourmet burger and Italian sausage meat, so much flavour and has bit of a kick. Delicious served with our home made pasta sauce. In the Lamb Innovation category we entered: Lamb meatballs with black pudding centre, Highland Lamb en croute (like a Wellington but with loin of lamb, haggis, black pudding and a creamy mushroom sauce). Herby Rack with black pudding - a rack of lamb trimmed and with black pudding in it - glazed with a mint and rosemary marinade. My favourite entry had to be the Crunchy Garlic and Herb Crusted Lamb lolly pops - literally quite a mouthful. These are delicious and so simple. We have sealed them ready for you to bake for 10 minutes. Check out the photo, of course I had to make two extra for lunch! ...

I’ve been in Holland with the Q-Guild (we're a member) who represent the UK's best butchers. I attended the Dutch Butchers show and was able to see new innovations and new products. I also visited an amazing butchers near Rotterdam who shared space with a cheese & wine retailer and baker (incredible!) It was great to see all theses trades together in one space. We also visited the Verstegen factory where, as most of our customers will know, our pepper sauce is made. I tried at loads of new sauces and marinades so look out for some exiting new products- I’ve have had lots of ideas already, so stay tuned.     ...
