We added more to the Mearns T. McCaskie awards list following the Scottish Craft Butchers Awards 2017 in August.
As usual, there was stiff competition from the fine butchers of Scotland in the Speciality Pie Awards, Mince Round Awards and Traditional Steak Pie Evaluation. After much tasting and pondering from the judges, Mearns T. McCaskie were delighted to be awarded a Silver Award for our Mince Round, a Gold Award for our Traditional Steak Pie which continues to be a huge favourite with our customers all over the UK and a Gold Award for our Steak, Chorizo and Red Wine Pie.
Nigel said "We feel the steak and chorizo with red wine works better as a casserole and will be part of our new pots of taste range which is coming soon! Congratulations to my fellow butchers who won the top titles in their regions and overall.”

Recently all supermarkets pulled products made with Eggs from Holland and Europe. I said to Helen laws have to change; not just in the state where the products are made but which country the ingredients come from.
Then I read that sausages from an unnamed supermarket pose a risk to human health using (you guessed it) imported pork meat from Holland.
I think consumers need to be aware that so much of what they eat may be made in UK but the meat - goodness knows where it is from. I wonder what the next story will be?

Mearns T McCaskie has been judged a Finalist and awarded a Highly Commended for two products in the 2017 Meat Management Awards. The Awards attract entries from some of the biggest and most innovative names in the UK meat market and cover everything from food production to individual meat products prepared by mass producers and smaller producers such as local butchers.
We were up against some stiff competition who were among the winners at the Awards dinner presentations on 28th June 2017 in Birmingham. The prestigious black tie event was hosted by comedian and actor Miles Jump and attended by about 400 guests from the winning companies and organisations all of whom represent the finest meat product producers in the country.
The products we were recognised for:
Best Bacon Product Finalist for Bacon and Cheese Truffles
Best Lamb Product Highly Commended for Garlic and Herb Lamb Lollipops
The nominees were voted for by Meat Management magazine readers and judged by industry experts. The judging criteria was based on the product description, appearance before and after cooking, taste/flavour, texture, small, packaging and presentation, originality/innovation, price and value for money.

After hearing recently that the Herald Restaurant Critic Ron Mackenna had been doing a review of the Seaview Cafe to say I was bloody nervous is an understatement!
I read the Herald every week and always read with interest the good and the bad of restaurants Ron visits never thinking one day he'll call at our door.
Helen was out the door and along to the paper shop before 6 to get a Herald and presented it to me still in bed with a slight smile. That was good enough for me to read on. Ron was in on Bank Holiday Monday and he had a McCaskie’s Steak Pie and McCaskie's Scotch Pie and loved both although he would have preferred the pie in a dish lidded like we sell in the butchers.
I would say it was very positive on the whole. Now breathe Nigel!

McCaskie’s Big Summer BBQ Weekend Join us for a celebration of brilliant “all-you-can-eat” BBQ food and wonderful wines at a special event hosted by McCaskie's Seaview Cafe on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th June 2017.
We are now taking bookings for our BBQ weekend which will be our biggest event of the summer and where you can taste our new flavours and products first!
The event schedule will be as follows:
6.30pm - 7.30pm - Enjoy some new exiting wines and some gorgeous gins with Fever-Tree tonics which will be tasted hopefully in the sun to get you in the mood for the fantastic BBQ food to follow!
7.15pm onwards - We will be barbecuing tasty McCaskie’s sausages, burgers, steaks, ribs and delicious Spring lamb from Bute. There will also be berries and cream to round off the BBQ.
The format will be very relaxed as you can sit inside and have the food brought to your table in the Seaview Cafe or just help yourself from the BBQ. If the weather isn’t perfect all food from the BBQ can be brought into the Cafe.
Spaces are limited so tickets are on a first come basis and are £30 per person (includes wine and gin tasting). £5.00 from each ticket sold will be donated to Ardgowan Hospice. Bookings only please!

It's a tough job, having to take your work home with you!
We had Enotria & Coe (our wine suppliers) round recently for a BBQ where we matched our sausages, steaks and burgers with a new range of top Riojas.
We tried eight wonderful wines and have decided to make one our white wine of the summer. It’s a wonderful Rueda (2016 Verdejo, Ramon Bilbao) which is so fresh, full of flavour and a joy to drink. We found it to be wonderful on its own but it also stood up to all the meats from the BBQ. The Rioja Reserva was also a stand out wine.

McCaskie Butchers were recently awarded the Scottish Craft Butchers Diamond Award (the highest award they can give) for their Ready Meals Awards 2017. The ready meal that really stood out to win the coveted award was our Braised Ox Cheek in Creamy Mash. There is only one Diamond Award presented so we were immensely proud of the achievement.
McCaskie’s were also the recipients of Ready Meal Gold Awards for Chicken Lasagne and Swedish Meatballs in Tomato Sauce.
